Honor Killings in Iran Is Denied By National Iranian-American Council

May 23, 2009

On April 24, 2009, the National Iranian-American Council (NIAC), in response to a well-documented lecture on “Islamic Regime’s Lobbies in the US” by Mr. Hassan Dai, (member of the Board of Directors of the Progressive American-Iranian Committee (PAIC) in Washington D.C.) has issued a statement. In this statement, NIAC has claimed that it has been very successful in its accomplishments on behalf of Iranian-American community. The statement proclaims, NIAC has prevented war with Iran, and has stopped Hollywood to produce films which present a bad image of Iranians in this country among others. (1)

In this article, I try to shed some light on the self-claimed accomplishments by the NIAC in Hollywood on behalf of the Iranians, and also examine and evaluate the truthfulness of this claim.

After reading and pondering about NIAC’s statement of April 24, 2009 and in search of finding facts surrounding the claimed accomplishments, I observed how this organization with Mr. Terita Parsi, as its President, distort the facts about Iran under the “Satanic Regime.” I noticed they provide face lifting and lip service to the regime and claim success of the Iranian-American community. This is alarming, which requires close attention of Iranian-American communities, who are mostly victims of the Islamic Regime terrorism, one way or another, and who have escaped from the Regime’s terror machine to save their life.

Mr. Wayne Kramer has been working on the production of a film “Crossing Over” in 2007. The film addresses the subject of honor killing in immigrant communities.

On May 14, 2007, Mr. Terita Parsi, as President of NIAC and on behalf of the Iranian-American writes to Mr. Kramer and in the letter says, “There is no statistical evidence of honor killings occurring in Iran. In Tehran, which houses over1/6 of the population, or about 12 million people, the practice is nonexistent. Indeed honor killing has no roots in Iranian culture.” (2)

Etemad news paper in Tehran reports “in the first six month of the year in 2008, there has been fifty cases of honor killing in Tehran only, which counts 35 percent of  murders in Tehran and shows an increasing trend, which is alarming.” This is only official reported cases! (3) It should be mentioned that there is no accurate statistics about honor killings, because many of these murders will not be reported. But, according to the Sociologist without Boarders report “Between 1376-1380 Iranian calendar year (1997-2001), there has been more than 7000 cases of murder in which includes 400 honor-killing cases. (3) Ironically, these facts are denied by Mr. Terita Parsi and NIAC.

Mr. Terita Parsi emigrated from Sweden to the United States not too long ago, and in fact, there was a report of the honor killings among Iranian immigrant community in Sweden, in 2004 as well.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in his speech at Columbia University in September 2008, announced, “There are no homosexuals in Iran.” Could that be because the regime is executing homosexuals ‘like “Mehran” the 13 years old boy whom the regime hanged? In his interview with the New York Times on September 26, 2008, Ahmadinejad denied execution of juveniles in Iran. In 2008 alone, eight children were executed and the Islamic Republic is ranked number one in child execution. In fact, 140 plus juveniles are awaiting execution at the moment. In addition, in 2008 alone, the Islamic Republic had the highest per capita executions in the World.

Despite being a signatory to international treaties that clearly prohibit the heinous practice of child execution in Iran, the Islamic regime has carried out and continues to carry out, many executions for crimes committed by people younger than 18 years of age, against international human rights law. In 2006, the President of the Islamic Republic, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, blocked efforts to stop juvenile executions in Iran, according to Human Rights Watch.

Again, Ahmadinejad in his speech at the National Press Club, in September 2008 stated that, “The freest women in the world are women in Iran.” Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the “Satanic Regime” in Tehran declared “Iran is the most democratic and free country in the world.” You notice how these three aforementioned leaders blatantly deny unmitigated facts under the “Satanic Regime” in Iran.

Over the years, much of the world has been preoccupied with its own problems and shown little concern for the plight of the Iranian people until the Mullahs installed a firebrand Islamist, Ahmadinejad, as the President of the country.

Ahmadinejad is a racist, an Anti-Semitic, a Holocaust denier and allegedly, one of the hostage takers of the American diplomats in U.S. Embassy in Tehran in 1979, is also denying child executions in Iran. One of the Islamic Republic’s point man in the U.S., Terita Parsi of the NIAC, denying honor killings in Iran. It is farce and it is a shame. Mahatma Gandhi once said, “It has always been a mystery to me how men can feel themselves honored by the humiliation of their fellow beings.”

His hateful rhetoric aside, President Ahmadinejad has reported on events that are terribly strange, to say the least: Behaviors and statements that raise serious questions about his mental state. During his speech at the United Nations General Assembly in September of 2005, for instance, he claimed to have been enveloped by a light that made the entire audience focused on him for the duration without anyone blinking.

Honor killing is an act of murder, carried out by a husband, an immediate male family member or cousins, to punish a family member, who is perceived to have brought dishonor upon an entire family.

Unless this kind of self-reflection and self-criticism become the norm in the Muslim community, much-needed reform will remain elusive. This includes addressing the root causes of honor killings and sanctioned violence against Muslim women. Some of the actions which lead to honor killings in Muslim families are: committing adultery or fornication, being the victim of rape or sexual assault, refusing an arranged marriage, pre-marital sex, flirting, seeking divorce etc. In honor killing, Muslims who commit or assist in the commission of the murders, view these murders as heroic even and fulfillment of their religious obligation.

Throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe, many young Muslim women are being targeted for violence. The cases reported show the killings are primarily a Muslim-on-Muslim crime, and ninety-percent of the cases reported in the U.S. is among the Muslim communities.(4) United nations estimate that at least 5,000 women are murdered every year for dishonoring their families.(5)

Honor Killings are the worst violation of human rights against women. Nonetheless, in the Islamic Republic of Iran, these crimes are condoned by Islamic penal code. Article 630 and 220 of the Islamic penal code in Iran, is giving approval to these crimes. Iranian legal experts say that “These two Islamic penal codes license and promote the honor killings in Iran”. (6)

If those who commit or assist in the commission of honor killings view these killings as bravery act, view the murder as the fulfillment of their religious obligation, and wash their shame with blood, Terita Parsi is washing the thick blood from the face of “Satanic Regime” with honor.

It should be mentioned that the “Satanic Regime” has established an extended direct and indirect network of front companies, mosques and other organizations in every country in Europe and North America, to promote its interest and policies. Second generation of Iranians who are interested in their Persian heritage, should be cautioned and alerted not to fall in the trap of these anti-Iranian organizations that are very similar to pro-Islamic Republic lobbyists, NIAC.

Daioleslam’s Speech at Libel Lawfare Conference

May 23, 2009

Ladies and gentlemen,

It is an honor for me to be with you today. I am grateful to the Legal Project at the Middle East Forum and to the other sponsors for this opportunity.

For the past several years, I have been investigating the Iranian Regime’s lobby in the US.  My reports have been largely published by major Farsi websites and some US journals. I have appeared in many radio and TV broadcasts aired to Iran, including Voice of America. Because of writing on this issue, smear attacks and legal scare tactics have been directed against me.  This has restricted my freedom of speech, has affected my safety, the safety of my family here in the US and also my family in Iran.

Allow me to tell you, why and how I became interested in studying the Iranian regime’s web of influence in the U.S.  For almost a decade, we watched then Congressman Bob Ney fighting passionately to ease sanctions and policy against Tehran.  In 2005, when Jack Abramof and Bob Ney’s corruption scandal became public, I and many other Iranians had a very simple question:  Why would a person that so readily makes his services available to the highest bidder, so passionately care for the Iranian rulers?

During these times, Bob Ney had a young Iranian foreign policy advisor in his office.   So, why would a lawmaker with no official role in the foreign policy have a foreign policy advisor on Iran?

This advisor was Mr. Trita Parsi, a young Iranian from Sweden who according to his own declaration, led a “lobbying organization”  aimed at “influencing elected representatives” in the US whose primary focus was to remove the sanctions against Iran.

Mr. Parsi is the president of the National Iranian American Council (known as NIAC), which is the most active Iranian organization inside the US Congress.

In April 2007, I published the result of my investigation in an article titled “Iran’s Oil Mafia, penetrating the US political system” detailing how Mr. Parsi and his organization were supported, praised and trusted by the Iranian regime.

The first reaction to my article came from the governmental press in Tehran.  Six newspapers and websites close to the regime defended NIAC and attacked my reputation and accused me of being an agent of the New Conservatives, AIPAC and Israel. The ultra radical Ghods newspaper wrote: The Neocons attack the Iranian lobby in the US.

Then, Mr. Parsi and his colleagues in NIAC publically accused me of being a terrorist and warmonger.

A few weeks later, the Voice of America’s Persian Service took interest, and sought to organize a face-to-face debate between Mr. Parsi and me. I accepted the invitation, he did not show up.

After the broadcast, NIAC’s lawyer sent a hostile and threatening letter to VOA demanding a halt to broadcasting programs about NIAC. The VOA gave in. This is an example of the chilling effect that these threats have on the media. Once this intimidation campaign paid off, NIAC boasted on its website that it had “Made Progress in Defamation Case with VOA.”

NIAC in presenting their own lawyer’s letter as if it were legal action had a similar impact on many other media that had published articles on NIAC written by myself and others.  Fearing the risk of a law suit that would bankrupt them, these media chose to stay away from the subject of the Iranian lobby altogether. This was exactly what NIAC had intended.

For example, Thomas Lifson, the editor of the online magazine “American Thinker” declined to publish my article and wrote to me:

“I received news of the legal action against Voice of America just prior to publication of your article.  Because our website has no financial resources (we are still in debt), I cannot afford to risk a legal action, which would simply destroy us. I wish that I had the resources to fight them. But I had to not publish your article. I am very sorry.”

During these times, my main encouragement was the support I received from the Iranian community that opposes the Iranian regime’s advocates and lobbyists. Consequently, more and more people have come forward to raise questions and voice their concerns. I was not the first to talk about this issue and there are actually thousands who continue to talk about it.

NIAC’s final response was to bring a lawsuit against me, which also intends to silence other like-minded critics.

I was not about to choose silence.  I hired a lawyer and started to fight back.  After a short time, my personal resources were gone and I realized that such an endeavor could not be sustained by me alone. I asked for help. The Legal Project at the Middle East Forum, and the firm of Sidley Austin, rose up to the challenge and graciously extended a supporting hand.  With their assistance, I have been able to stand up to their bullying, continue to exercise my first amendment right, and fulfill my duty to expose the truth.

In closing, I thank the organizers of this briefing, and I express my deepest gratitude to the legal project at the Middle East Forum which has had the courage and the wisdom to recognize the threat of the Tehran’s influence on American national security.

Thank you

May 9, 2009

May 2, 2009

World Order? Never!

May 2, 2009

Written by Bijan Eftekhari

Nobody could have expressed better than did it today, 15 April, the Supreme Leader of the Iranian Islamic Regime, Ali Khamenei, the seriousness of a government for not being integrated in the international community. When attending to a graduation ceremony of the special forces of ideological regime Pasdaran, he stated in his speech that: “Those who are recommending Iran to return to the world order were unpleasant about the victory of the Islamic Revolution, the Supreme Leader said, describing this as surrendering to bullying powers and accepting unfair world order.”1

What Khamenei is naming here as ” World Order” is exactly the conditions that the group 5+1 is planning to offer to the Iranian regime in return of the abandon of its nuclear program: a normalization of the relationships with the Western countries, the reestablishment of the relations with the United-States and playing a normal and standard role in the Middle-East affairs. All these cases are summarized in the Khamenei’s language as “World Order” that he is explicitly blaming and refuting. He said clearly: “The Iranian nation has responded to such requests with a ‘no’ in the past 30 years.

Which means that he knows that the secret of the survival of its fragile theocracy is in the isolation the regime has been imposing to its people since 1979. An isolation that limits the Iran’s relations with the world to only three needs: Exportation of oil, Importation of the basic goods and playing a negative role where it can do it for its ideological interests.

The Iranian regime had always had a great fear to open itself to the world, essentially because of the contradiction between its bizarre oligarchy with the requirements of a government’s standard function.

In the “Word Order” the term that stares Khamehnei and its regime is not exactly World but Order. Which means that they would be obliged to leave their untamed and wild manner of governance for a orderly and lawful conduct.

The more the world shows its openness regarding the Iranian regime the more this latter demonstrates its firm desire to be replied on itself and express its concerns for what Teheran will be expected to show as response to all these growing messages of normalization.

Khamenei “further stated that all the pressures in the past 30 years, which of course were futile, were aimed at undermining Iran’s lofty status.”3 This purpose proves simply that the continuity of the last three decades’ conditions is the best thing the Iranian regime would like to get: Not having any pressure from outside in order to handle the increasing pressures of inside.

At the same time Ahmadinejad, the Preisdent of the Islamic Republic of Iran was announcing that his government will present a new package of proposal to solve all the problems regarding Iran and even world crisis.”4 This code is well known; they will put the conditions that make impossible any peaceful approach of the “Iranian Problem”. And this is exactly what the Iranian rulers want.

The Obama’s administration should not forget that the Iranian regime is a totalitarian dictatorship that is frightened about the idea of any normalization of its behaviors. This regime will turn down if it accepts to respect the IAEA norms in the nuclear matter, the UN’s norms in the human rights matter or other International laws’ obligations. Then, the efforts to bring this regime in the right way is nothing but wasting time.

Roxana Saberi: Another Victim of the “Satanic Regime” in Iran

May 2, 2009

Written by Siavash Abghari
April 30, 2009

Roxana Saberi, the former Miss North Dakota, the recipient of the Miss America Scholar award, recipient of two masters degree (one in journalism from Northwestern University, and one in international relations from Cambridge University) is a talented American-Iranian journalist, who has worked for NPR, BBC, ABC, and Fox News. She is indeed a brave rising star in international journalism.

Roxana Saberi, who has been working and studying in Iran for last six years was arrested in January of this year and she is jailed in notorious Evin Prison, which is a torture chamber for thousands of prodemocracy and human rights activists, students, women, teachers, workers and religious minorities. Using torture, the Islamic Regime tries to break the prisoners’ resistance and get the forced confession for the Regime’s propaganda apparatus. . Also, Evin Prison has been, and, is still one of the mass killing grounds of the Clerical Regime with the satanic ideology! In summer of the 1988 alone, more than 10,000 political prisoners were massacred in a three-month period!

Initially, Roxana Saberi, was accused of buying and having wine in her car. Later she was charged with reporting as a journalist with an expired press card. Finally, without any evidence, she was charged with espionage in a closed door, and without the presence of a defense attorney! All of the arbitrariness and self-serving behaviors by the regime and its security agents are part of the “Satanic Regime’s characteristics! First, with regard to drug and alcohol, the Revolutionary Guard is the smuggling Mafia. The security agents make it a practice to plant illegal substances (e.g., drug, alcohol, porno-video or gun etc.) in the car or the house of prodemocracy activists, or, who ever they consider as a threat or whoever the regime wants to eliminate. Then, they search the property of their target and charge the person with possession of illegal substances, which they themselves planted in the possession of the victim! The regime tries to discredit the individual or the group by defamation of character. This is a common and well known practice by the regime.

Roxana Saberi has never conducted any interview with anyone in Iran after the expiration of her press card. Roxana may have been interviewed by some news agencies as an informed journalist and may have expressed her own opinion. This is not tantamount to practicing journalism with an expired press card.

In the last thirty years, the regime, in order to maintain her grips on power and expand her “Satanic Ideology” has accused, without any exception, many intellectuals of espionage for US and Israel. The regime has arrested several Iranian-Americans in the past few years accusing them of attempts to overthrow the regime through “velvet revolution” or espionage! Thus, Roxana Saberi’s accusation of espionage is just an example of the Satanic Rulers’ tactic to scare the public and maintain their grip on the prodemocracy groups in Iran.

In July 2003, Zahra Kazemi, the Iranian-Canadian photo journalist was murdered by the Public Prosecutor of Tehran and his associates, while in detention in Evin Prison!

According to the Human Rights Watch report, the Islamic regime judiciary is the center of the human rights violations and a small group of judges accountable to the Supreme Leader has shut down public dissent through torture, indefinite solitary confinement and denial of basic due process rights to all political prisoners. This report indicates that “The authorities have largely succeeded in their campaign to send a message to the broader public that the costs of voicing peaceful political criticism are unbearably high”. As it is noticed, the regime’s judiciary system is part of the repression apparatus rather than protecting the rights of citizens!

According to United Nations report, “the climate of fear induced by the systematic repression of people expressing critical views against the authorized political and religious doctrine and the functioning of the institutions coupled with the severe and disproportionate sentences imposed lead to self-censorship on the part of many journalists, intellectuals, politicians, students and the population at large, thus in effect impeding freedom of expression”.

The espionage charge against Roxanna Saberi is baseless and sham but the motive behind it is real, and is in accord with the regime’s “Satanic Rule”. There is an Islamic rule called “Taqyyah”, which means, no matter how evil and satanic the motive is, whatever you do to advance the cause of Islam is acceptable! Now they have taken Roxana Saberi, a high profile journalist, hostage! The motive may be to pressure the Obama Administration, to get the release of three members of the regime’s Revolutionary Guard jailed in Iraq. Or, it may be motivated by internal factional politics for the June sham election, or in response to President Obama’s recent overtures to the regime. Ahmadinejad’s faction and Revolutionary Guard feel they become marginalized through dialog and possible reconciliation with the US. The Ahmadinejad’s racist statements about Israel on Monday April 20, 2009, at Geneva anti-racism meeting, reinforces this motive. Clearly, Roxana, as a high profile American-Iranian journalist, seems to be a case to reinforce their motives. Yes, Roxana is therefore another victim of the regime with “Satanic Ideology”.

The irony is, knowing the Islamic regime and its officials with the gross and systematic violations of the human rights on record, yet the UN provided a platform for Mahmoud Ahmadinejad; one of the hostage takers of American diplomats in US Embassy in Tehran, in 1979, an executioner, a racist, an Anti-Semitic and Holocaust denier, to talk about racism! It’s all a farce!

According to International Federation for Human Rights, Islamic regime is ranked 160th. Out of 166 countries in term of freedom of expression. In 2008 alone, Iran had the highest per capita execution in the World, among them were seven children! The sources of this information include the Annual reports of Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, UN Commission on Human rights, State Department’s and other organizations that report on human rights in Iran. All the sources indicate that continued gross violations of human rights including public hanging, stoning, eyes gouging, amputation of arms and legs, just to name a few, is a common practice within the regimes’ judicial system! Given these facts, that Ahmadinejad was given a platform in Ati-Racism Conference remains understandable.

The regime’s representatives must be banned from participating in any conference on human rights and be expelled from UN and all other international agencies, as long as they are violating the human rights of the people. I don’t believe it is that difficult to understand the fact that the regime, which has no respect what so ever for its people, does not care about others?

The Islamic Regime was the first government established with the Islamic ideology in the region in 1979, and since then, Islamic extremism and terrorism have increased. The regime has tried to expand its influence in other Moslem countries, especially supporting the Islamic extremist groups in regional conflicts

Therefore, to promote human rights and democracy and fight international terrorism, the policies of the democratic governments, the United Nations, and international human rights organizations toward the Islamic regime are very important. These governments and institutions should provide the moral and political support for prodemocracy movement in Iran. This can be achieved by demanding the respect for human rights, in any possible meeting and negotiation with the regime.

Therefore, the role of the Iranians in the Diaspora, particularly the Iranian-Americans NGOs, should be to lobby western and US governments and politicians to pressure the Islamic regime to respect human rights and liberty of individuals in the country. The urgent issue is not just to be lobbying to promote the interest of major corporations and the “Satanic Regime”! The improvement of human rights conditions in Iran, supplemented with the moral and political support by the Western democratic governments can unravel the Islamic regime’s hold on power. An empirical study of 150 countries shows that ensuring human rights, civil liberties and freedom of press significantly reduces the chance of dictatorial regime’s survival

Therefore, the United States, Western democracies and all international organizations in their dealing with the Islamic regime in Iran, should pressure the regime to respect human rights, and at the same time should lend their moral and political support to the Iranian people in their struggle for liberty and justice. A democratic and secular system of government in Iran has broad positive political impact in the region, and for the fight and defeat of international terrorism. Lets hope that Roxana Saberi along with all other political prisoners, who are not high profiles, obtain their liberty with the wise policy of all freedom loving people and institutions through head-on confrontation with and demand on the “Satanic Regime” in Iran.
